Faiths > Nichiren Buddhism
Millions of people with a desire to
cultivate humanistic values, respect for the
dignity of life and hope for the future of our
planet, base their lives on Nichiren Buddhism.
Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a lay society
of individuals practising this Buddhism and is
an active Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)
working in partnership with United Nations
agencies. It is dedicated to cultivating peace
through Buddhist practice and educational and
cultural activities.
Myoho-Renge-Kyo is the title of the Lotus Sutra,
the teaching of the first historically recorded
Buddha Shakyamuni or Siddartha Gautama. The
Lotus Sutra teaches that Buddha nature, the
power of wisdom, compassion, courage and life
force is inherent in all living beings.
Over 700 years ago, Nichiren Daishonin taught
that by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo we can
activate our Buddha nature and consequently, the
power to affect our own destiny and that of our
environment.
It does not offer a code of conduct or promote a
particular lifestyle. Faith is built through
chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo morning and evening
and learning about the philosophy and spirit of
Buddhism through studying the writings of
Nichiren Daishonin. Members share their
experiences of Buddhism with others; in this way
it is a balanced practice for oneself and
others.
